Meet The Nose: Introducing Amélie Bourgeois

November 10, 2023 Fragrance, Versatile Paris

What is a ‘nose’? A nose, or ‘nez’ is a French term used in perfumery to describe the people whose profession it is to compose perfume. Versatile Paris enlisted the expertise of Parisian perfume lab, FLAIR and their noses to create their exquisite collection of alcohol-free perfumes. FLAIR is a female-led team co-founded by Amélie Bourgeois, the nose behind several Versatile fragrances including Gueule de Bois, Accrodisiaque and Rital Date.

Meet Amélie Bourgeois, Nose, Perfumer & Co-Founder of FLAIR

Can you introduce yourself?

I’m Amélie Bourgeois, and I’m associated with Anne-Sophie Behaghel at Flair. I am also one of the founders. Flair is a perfume studio that combines creativity, quality and accessibility to offer its customers a unique experience. We are close to laboratories such as IFF or Firmenich, which allows us to select beautiful natural and synthetic raw materials but also atypical.

Perfumer – a vocation, a calling?

A meeting rather. That of my master perfumer, by chance, who trained me and made me passionate about perfume. I found in it an introspective journey. Since my childhood, I have been bathed in scent. It is also one of my refuges. As a child, and as a small anecdote, I loved to smell and let my nose fly in the wheat fields.

A colour that defines you?

Your comforting smell?

Féminité du Bois by Shiseido.

Your favourite accord?

Immortelle and ambroxan.

What is the perfect combination for you?

I would say cypriol and cashmeran.

Your inspirations?

I am a dreamer by nature. My inspirations are therefore linked to travel, nature and especially to moments in life. One goal for me when I am inspired: to create without limits

Your ideal perfume?

For me, the ideal perfume would be one that tells a story but above all that touches us.

Your favourite raw material?

What is the raw material that you hate?

The Jasmine Sambac

Your favourite food?

I often have cravings for snack cakes…

Your favourite drink?

The famous Bloody Mary cocktail!

Do you find Versatile briefs easily?

They are very interesting but very specific. Coralie knows what she wants, her demands and requirements are very high.

What do you think of your Versatile creations?

Rital date was a beautiful development, in my opinion. The love story between Coralie and Pierre, is a positive story, so this perfume could only be positive too. Let’s not forget, that the brief was very funny: limoncello, tomato leaf, pesto, it was great!

In your opinion, what is the element that will evolve in perfumery?

I would say, naturalness in fruit.
